Zoom Clips vs Loom: can Clips replace Loom for your team?

Oliver Eidel 9 min read

If your company already pays for Zoom Workplace Pro or Business, Zoom Clips can replace Loom for most internal async updates at no extra cost. Those plans include Clips Plus, with unlimited clips, transcripts, trimming, and viewer statistics. Loom still wins when async video is the main workflow: it has the larger recorder-and-library product, a more usable free tier, and AI editing on Business + AI.

On the free tiers the answer flips. Clips Basic allows five very short clips per person, which is enough to try the feature and not enough to rely on it.

Prices and limits were checked against Zoom’s and Loom’s public pages in October 2026. Both companies change plans often, so confirm them before buying.

What Zoom Clips is and where it lives

Zoom Clips is the asynchronous video recorder inside Zoom Workplace. It is not a separate app. You open the Clips tab in the Zoom Workplace desktop or mobile app, or in the Zoom web portal, and click New clip. On desktop you can also start from the Mac menu bar or the Windows system tray.

Zoom’s support documentation lists desktop recording on Windows, macOS, and Linux and mobile recording on iOS and Android. Each clip goes into your clip library, where you can watch, share, or download it.

Account owners and admins decide whether people can create clips at all. Zoom lets them enable or disable Clips at the account, group, or user level and lock the setting so users can’t change it. If you can’t find the Clips tab, ask your admin before assuming your plan excludes it.

Free vs paid Clips limits

Clips Basic comes with the free Workplace Basic plan and with users who don’t have a Clips Plus license. Zoom’s Clips pricing page lists up to five recordings per person, a three-minute screen recording limit, 720p video, trimming, custom thumbnails, comments, and emoji reactions. Zoom’s main Workplace pricing page describes the same tier as “5 two-minute clips.” Plan on two minutes until you have tested your own account.

Basic does not include transcripts, captions, uploads, or viewer statistics.

Clips Plus removes the count and length limits and adds:

  • recording at up to 4K;
  • stitching several clips together and uploading existing videos;
  • transcripts and closed captions;
  • AI-generated titles, descriptions, chapters, and tags;
  • viewer and admin insights;
  • download controls and branding.

Clips Plus costs $6.99 per month on its own, or $5.83 per month billed annually. It is included with Workplace Pro ($16.99 per user monthly) and Workplace Business ($21.99 per user monthly). That is why most “Zoom Clips vs Loom” decisions are really about whether the company already pays for Workplace.

Recording options

Both tools cover the three standard modes: screen with camera, screen only, and camera only. Zoom also lists on-screen annotations, background customization, noise suppression, and touch-up while recording. Loom offers a browser extension plus desktop and mobile apps.

The practical difference is reach. Zoom’s own setup guide covers recording in the desktop and mobile apps, so test the web portal in your managed browser if your team can’t install the Zoom client. Loom’s Chrome extension is a common way to record without a desktop install.

Editing and trimming

Clips Basic lets you trim the start and end. Clips Plus adds stitching, which helps when you record a walkthrough in parts, and uploads, so existing videos can live in the same library.

Loom Business includes basic waveform editing and uploads and downloads. Business + AI adds automatic video enhancement, advanced editing, and filler-word and silence removal. If people send rough first takes and want them cleaned up automatically, Loom goes further.

Transcripts and AI

This is where Loom’s free tier stands out. Starter includes transcriptions in 50+ languages, while Zoom keeps transcripts and captions behind Clips Plus.

For AI, Clips Plus uses Zoom AI Companion to generate titles, descriptions, chapters, and tags from the clip’s transcript. Loom Business + AI generates titles, summaries, and chapters. It also adds meeting notes and recap emails for recorded meetings. Plain Loom Business has no AI features.

Sharing and permissions

Clips can be shared with a copy link, inside Zoom Workplace apps, by email, or as an embed. Zoom advertises custom viewing permissions and sign-in requirements, so a clip can be open to anyone with the link or limited to your organization or to invited people. You can also download a clip as an MP4 from the desktop app (not from mobile).

One detail matters for external viewers: Zoom’s support guide says guests can’t comment on a clip until they sign in to a Zoom account. If clients or candidates will reply to your videos, test that flow first.

Loom share pages let viewers watch, comment, and react, and they have been the core of the product from the start. Both tools let you send a link to someone outside the company. The questions to test are who can respond and what that person has to sign up for.

Analytics and viewers

Clips Plus shows statistics such as plays (counted after five seconds), completion rate, reactions, and comments. Clips Basic shows no statistics. Loom includes viewer insights on Starter, and Business adds engagement insights.

If your main question is “did my manager watch this?”, Loom answers it for free. Zoom answers it once you have Plus.

Storage and admin controls

Zoom’s appeal for IT is consolidation: one vendor, one admin console, and Clips controls that work like other Workplace settings, including account-level toggles and data retention options. If your security team has already approved Zoom, Clips comes with no new vendor review.

Loom is now part of Atlassian. Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM, advanced admin insights, and a Zoom import integration. For a company that already lives in Jira and Confluence, that is the same consolidation argument made for a different vendor.

Pricing side by side

Plan Price What you get
Clips Basic Free 5 short clips per person, 720p
Clips Plus add-on $6.99/month ($5.83 annually) Unlimited clips, 4K, transcripts, insights
Workplace Pro $16.99/user/month Meetings plus Clips Plus
Loom Starter Free 25 videos, 5 minutes each
Loom Business $18/user/month Unlimited videos and length
Loom Business + AI $24/user/month AI editing, summaries, meeting notes

Loom advertises up to 17% off with annual billing. The Loom pricing guide breaks down seats and the annual math.

When Zoom Clips wins

  • Your company already pays for Workplace Pro or Business, so Clips Plus costs nothing extra.
  • Async video is occasional: a weekly update, an onboarding clip, a quick answer.
  • IT prefers fewer vendors and already manages Zoom users and retention.
  • You want clips next to meetings, chat, and Whiteboard in one app.

When Loom wins

  • Async video is a daily habit and the library has to stay organized.
  • You need transcripts and viewer insights without paying.
  • You want AI cleanup such as filler-word and silence removal, summaries, and chapters.
  • Your company already standardizes on Atlassian.

A third option: Chairkick

If neither bundle fits, Chairkick is a focused browser recorder. It records your screen and camera in the browser with no install, creates a share page with a transcript, a summary, timestamped comments, and view tracking, and supports embeds. Links can be unlisted or limited to workspace members. Pro costs $9 per recorder per month or $72 a year, and new workspaces get a 14-day Pro trial with no credit card. Viewers never need a paid seat, and they can comment without an account.

It does not run meetings, so it won’t replace Zoom. It replaces the Loom subscription. Compare it with the other options in best Loom alternatives, or see how switching from Loom works.

FAQ

Is Zoom Clips free?

Yes, in a limited form. Clips Basic is free with up to five short clips per person at 720p. Clips Plus costs $6.99 per month or comes included with Workplace Pro and Business.

Can Loom record Zoom meetings?

Yes. Loom’s meeting recording sends a “Loom Notetaker” participant into Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams calls on your connected calendar. It works on any Loom plan, but summaries and recap emails need Business + AI. Every participant can see the Notetaker, and the host can remove it. To record with Zoom itself, see how to record a Zoom meeting.

Does Zoom Clips work in a browser?

You can open your clip library and start a new clip from the Zoom web portal. Zoom’s detailed setup guide focuses on the desktop and mobile apps, so check browser recording on your own account if installing Zoom isn’t an option.

How long can a Zoom clip be?

On Clips Basic, a few minutes: Zoom’s pages list either two or three. Clips Plus removes the duration limit.

Can I use Zoom Clips and Loom together?

You can, but two libraries make old videos harder to find. Most teams pick one recorder and use Zoom for live meetings.

Sources and fact check

Checked October 6, 2026 against Zoom Clips pricing, Zoom Workplace pricing, Zoom’s support articles on getting started with Clips and enabling or disabling Clips, the Zoom Clips product page, Loom pricing, and Atlassian’s guide to recording meetings with Loom. Zoom’s own pages disagree on the Clips Basic length limit (two vs three minutes).

Leaving Loom? Bring your videos.

Paste your Loom share links and Chairkick imports each video with its title and captions. Then keep recording in the browser for $9 per recorder instead of Loom's $18. 14-day Pro trial, no card.
