How to record a PowerPoint presentation with audio and video

To record a PowerPoint presentation with audio and video, open the deck in the PowerPoint desktop app, select Record > From Beginning, turn on your camera and microphone, and click Start recording. PowerPoint saves your narration and camera clip on each slide. When you’re done, use Export > Export Video (Windows) or File > Export (Mac) to turn it into an MP4 you can share.

That covers most people. The details matter, though: PowerPoint for the web can’t record a slide show, narration stops during slide transitions, and an exported video can easily be too large to email. This guide walks through every route, including recording audio for a single slide and recording with a screen recorder when you want one link instead of a file.

Your options at a glance

Method Voice Your face Output Works in PowerPoint for the web
Record (recording studio) Yes, per slide Yes, camera video or cameo Narration stored in the deck; export to MP4 or MOV No
Insert > Audio > Record Audio One clip per slide No Audio icon on the slide No (desktop feature)
Export > Export Video Includes recorded narration Includes recorded camera MP4 (Windows also WMV; Mac also MOV) Desktop steps shown here
A screen recorder such as Chairkick Yes, mic plus system or tab audio Yes, camera bubble A share link with a transcript Yes, record the browser tab

Need one shareable link instead of an MP4 file? Record your slides with audio and camera in the browser, then share the recording link. Start recording

Microsoft’s recording tools apply to PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 and the 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024 desktop versions. Menus differ slightly between them; the steps below follow the current Microsoft 365 apps.

How to record a PowerPoint presentation on Windows

  1. Open your presentation in PowerPoint for Windows.
  2. Select Record in the top bar, or open the Record tab in the ribbon.
  3. Choose From Beginning or From Current Slide.
  4. In the recording studio, use the camera and microphone icons at the top to turn each on or off. The Select more options (···) menu lets you switch to an external camera or microphone.
  5. Pick a view: Teleprompter shows your notes near the camera, Presenter View shows notes and the next slide, and Slide View shows only the slide.
  6. Click Start recording. After a short countdown, present and talk.
  7. Use the arrows to move between slides, and the pen, highlighter, and laser tools to point things out. Pause and Stop are at the top.
  8. Click Play to review. To redo a slide, select Delete on that slide’s recording and record it again.

One gotcha: narration isn’t recorded during slide transitions. Pause for a beat after advancing before you start talking, or the first word of each slide can be cut off.

If you only want your camera, not your voice, on a slide, Reset to Cameo replaces the recorded narration with a live camera feed for an easy retake.

How to record a PowerPoint presentation on a Mac

  1. Open the deck in PowerPoint for Mac.
  2. Click Record in the top right, or go to Record > From Beginning or From Current Slide.
  3. In the recording studio, choose teleprompter or presenter view, and use the camera options to customize the Cameo frame or Blur background.
  4. Click Record, present, and use pause and resume as needed.
  5. Click Preview Play in the middle of the screen to review.

To start over, go to Record > Clear Recording and pick Clear Recording on Current Slide or Clear Recording on All Slides. Reset to Cameo on Current Slide or on All Slides swaps narration for the live cameo.

Can you record in PowerPoint for the web?

No. Microsoft’s documentation says plainly that PowerPoint for the web doesn’t support recording a slide show. If you only have the web version, for example on a Chromebook or a shared computer, present the deck in your browser and record it with a screen recorder (see the last section).

How to record audio on a single PowerPoint slide

Sometimes you only want narration on one slide, or you want to record audio clips without the full studio. In PowerPoint for Windows:

  1. Select the slide in Normal view.
  2. Go to Insert > Audio > Record Audio.
  3. Name the clip, select Record, and speak.
  4. Select Stop, then Play to check it. Select Record again to redo it, or OK to insert it.

An audio icon appears on the slide. By default, audio plays when someone clicks it; on the Playback tab you can make it start automatically or select Play across Slides for background audio. You can also insert a file you recorded elsewhere with Insert > Audio > Audio from File.

How to export a recorded PowerPoint as a video

Windows: go to File > Export > Create a Video, or select Export > Export Video from the recording studio.

Mac: go to File > Export (not Save As, which lacks the video options), then choose MP4 or MOV under File Format.

On both, choose a quality: Ultra HD (4K), Full HD (1080p), HD (720p), or Standard (480p). Keep Use Recorded Timings and Narrations selected so your voice and slide timings are included. 4K on Windows requires Windows 10 or later.

Quality Use it for
Full HD (1080p) The default for most talks and screen-shared content
HD (720p) Smaller files for email or slow connections
Ultra HD (4K) Large displays; files get big fast
Standard (480p) Very small files when detail doesn’t matter

Record a PowerPoint with a screen recorder

PowerPoint’s studio is great for a deck you’ll keep editing. A screen recorder is often faster when you want one video of you presenting, a link instead of a file, or you’re on PowerPoint for the web.

With Chairkick, everything runs in the browser:

  1. Start your slide show in PowerPoint (desktop or web).
  2. Open the Chairkick recorder, turn on your microphone and camera, and pick a corner for the camera bubble.
  3. Share the PowerPoint window, the browser tab with PowerPoint for the web, or your whole screen. Sharing a tab also records sound from it, mixed with your microphone.
  4. Present as you normally would. Narration doesn’t stop at transitions, and animations play exactly as your audience would see them.
  5. Stop the recording and copy the unlisted share link. It comes with a transcript, and viewers don’t need an account.

If audio is missing from a recording, see our guide to whether screen recording captures audio.

A 20-minute deck exported at 1080p can easily run to hundreds of megabytes. Most email providers cap attachments around 20–25 MB, so you’ll end up uploading the file to OneDrive, Google Drive, or a video host anyway. Our guide to sending a video through email compares the options.

If you record presentations regularly, for onboarding, training, or product demos, a link-first recorder skips the export-and-upload step entirely. Chairkick has a 14-day Pro trial without a card, then $9 per recorder per month; viewers are always free.

Tips for recording a presentation

  • Use Teleprompter view so your eyes stay near the camera while you read your notes.
  • Record slide by slide. In PowerPoint’s studio, a mistake only costs you one slide’s retake.
  • Leave a pause after each transition, since narration isn’t recorded during it.
  • Test your mic first with a quick microphone test.
  • Keep it short. Split long talks into parts, the way you would a tutorial video.

FAQ

How do I record audio on PowerPoint?

Use Record > From Beginning to narrate the whole deck, or Insert > Audio > Record Audio to add a clip to one slide. Both require the desktop app.

How do I record myself presenting a PowerPoint?

Turn on your camera in the recording studio before you click Start recording. Your video appears in the corner of each slide. A screen recorder with a camera bubble does the same in one continuous take.

Can I record a PowerPoint presentation with audio and video at the same time?

Yes. The recording studio captures your microphone and camera together, and Export Video combines them with the slides into one MP4.

Why is my narration cut off at the start of each slide?

PowerPoint doesn’t record narration during slide transitions. Wait a moment after advancing before you speak, or shorten the transitions.

Can I record in PowerPoint for the web?

No. Microsoft says PowerPoint for the web doesn’t support recording a slide show. Use the desktop app or a browser screen recorder.

What format does PowerPoint export video in?

MP4 on both Windows and Mac. Windows can also save Windows Media Video (WMV), and Mac can save MOV.
