The best Descript alternative depends on what you use Descript for. For podcasts and remote interviews, choose Riverside. For professional editing, Adobe Premiere Pro now has text-based editing built in. For short social clips, CapCut or Opus Clip. For quick edits in a browser tab, Kapwing or VEED. And if you mostly record your screen to explain something to a teammate or customer, a recorder such as Loom, Tella, or Chairkick does the job with less editing and a share link at the end.
Descript made “edit the video by editing the transcript” mainstream, and it’s still one of the most complete tools for it. People usually leave because of the metered pricing introduced in 2025, performance on long projects, or because a full production editor is more than their videos need.

Mostly making quick screen walkthroughs? If you do not need a full production editor, a browser recorder with a share link may be the simpler fit. Record a walkthrough

Why people look for Descript alternatives
- Metered pricing. On September 24, 2025, Descript replaced transcription hours with media minutes and AI credits. Media minutes are counted when you upload or record, not when you export, and unused minutes don’t roll over. Hobbyist includes 600 media minutes and 400 AI credits per editor per month; Creator includes 1,800 minutes and 800 credits. Heavy users of AI features can run out mid-month, and Descript’s Trustpilot reviews (2.6 out of 5 from 291 reviews when we checked) often mention credits running out and trouble cancelling.
- Performance on long projects. Slow performance and freezes are among the most common complaints in Descript’s G2 reviews, alongside the learning curve.
- More editor than the job needs. If most of your videos are five-minute screen walkthroughs for colleagues, a production editor with AI voices, remote recording rooms, and multitrack timelines is a lot of tool to maintain.
Before switching, list the Descript features you actually use each week. Most people find they rely on one or two: transcript editing, Studio Sound, filler-word removal, or remote recording. Pick the alternative that covers those.
Riverside: remote interviews and podcasts
Riverside records each participant locally in high quality and uploads the tracks separately, which makes it the strongest choice for interviews and podcasts recorded with guests in different places. Pro includes unlimited text-based editing plus AI removal of silences and filler words, so the Descript-style edit carries over.
The free plan includes two hours of multitrack recording once, at 720p with a watermark. Pro is $24 a month billed annually ($29 monthly), and Grow is $34 ($39). It runs in the browser, with a Mac app and mobile apps.
Choose it when your main use of Descript is recording and editing conversations. Skip it when you mostly record your own screen.
If you only need audio, Podcastle, now sold under the name Async, lists text-based audio editing and remote recording, from $11.99 a month billed annually ($19.99 monthly).
Adobe Premiere Pro: professional editing with text-based editing built in
Premiere Pro transcribes your footage and lets you edit the sequence from the transcript, including deleting all filler words and pauses at once. You also get the full professional timeline, color tools, and the rest of Adobe’s ecosystem.
It costs $22.99 a month on an annual plan, or comes with Creative Cloud Pro at $69.99 a month, and there’s a 7-day trial but no free version. It runs on Windows and Mac.
Choose it when you edit seriously and Descript’s timeline feels limiting, or you already pay for Creative Cloud. Skip it when you want simplicity; Premiere Pro has the steepest learning curve on this list.
CapCut: free editing for social video
CapCut is a free editor for desktop, web, and mobile with templates, effects, and auto-captions aimed at short social video. The desktop app includes transcript-based editing, where deleting text cuts the video. CapCut’s pricing page says its prices are for reference only and shows them in local currency, so check the price for your region before you subscribe to Pro.
Choose it when you make TikTok, Reels, or Shorts and want templates and effects. Skip it when you need team review, long-form podcasts, or predictable US pricing.
Kapwing and VEED: editing in the browser
Both run entirely in the browser, which helps on locked-down work computers.
Kapwing is built for teams editing together, with “Trim with Transcript” for text-based cuts. The free plan exports up to four minutes at 720p with a watermark, 30 minutes of exports a month. Pro is $16 a month billed annually ($24 monthly), and Business is $50 ($64).
VEED focuses on fast edits, subtitles, and translations. Its “Edit with Script” text-based editing is available even on the free plan, which exports at 720p, up to 10 minutes, with a watermark. Creator is $8 a month billed annually ($20 monthly), and Pro is $19 ($44). VEED has renamed and repriced its plans several times, so confirm at checkout.
Choose them when you want Descript-style editing without installing anything. Skip them when your projects are long and media-heavy.
Opus Clip: short clips from long videos
If you used Descript mainly to cut long podcasts or webinars into short clips, Opus Clip automates that: it finds highlights, reframes them vertically, and adds captions. The free plan gives 60 credits a month with watermarked clips that expire after three days. Starter is $15 a month, and Pro is $14.50 a month billed annually ($29 monthly), with text and timeline editing from Starter up.
Choose it when short-form clips are the goal. Skip it when you need to edit the full-length video.
Tella: polished screen recordings
Tella is a screen recorder for people who want their videos to look designed: layouts, automatic zooms, transcript editing, and silence and filler removal, with recordings up to six hours per clip and 4K export. There’s no free plan, but there’s a 7-day trial. Pro is $13 a month billed annually ($26 monthly), and Premium is $19 ($39). It records through Mac and Windows apps or a Chrome extension.
Choose it when you used Descript for product demos and want them faster to make. Skip it when you need podcast tools or multitrack editing. For a deeper comparison with Loom, see Loom vs Tella.
Loom vs Descript
Loom and Descript both record your screen and both let you edit by deleting words from the transcript. They’re still built for different jobs: Loom is for sending a video, Descript is for producing one.
| Loom | Descript | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Send a video message as a link and collect replies | Produce and edit videos and podcasts |
| Free plan | Starter: 25 videos per person, 5-minute recordings, 720p | 60 media minutes a month, 720p exports with a watermark |
| Edit by transcript | Business + AI and Enterprise | Every plan |
| Filler-word and silence removal | Business + AI | Limited on Free, included on paid plans |
| Sharing | Share page with comments, reactions, and viewer insights | Shareable pages and comments; most projects end as an export |
| Remote recording with guests | Not built for it | Rooms, up to 10 participants |
| AI voice | No | AI speech with custom voice clones |
| Paid price | Business $18/user/month; Business + AI $24 | Hobbyist $24/month; Creator $35 |
Choose Loom when the video is a message: a bug report, a code review, a project update, or an answer to a customer, where the reply matters more than polish. Note that editing by transcript, filler-word removal, and silence removal all need Business + AI.
Choose Descript when the video is content: a YouTube tutorial, a course lesson, a podcast episode, or anything you’ll polish, mix, and publish.
On price, one person who wants transcript editing pays about the same in both: Loom Business + AI at $24 a month or Descript Hobbyist at $24 a month, before annual discounts. The difference grows with a team: Loom bills each member of the workspace, while Descript bills each editor.
Chairkick: transcript editing for recordings you share
Chairkick sits between the two: Loom’s record-and-send workflow with Descript-style editing included in a $9 plan. You record your screen, camera, and microphone in a browser tab, with nothing to install, and the share link is ready when you stop. To edit, select words in the transcript, such as “um, wait, where was I”, and they’re cut from the video. You can also trim ranges on a waveform timeline. Edits are non-destructive with undo, and captions, chapters, and highlights re-align after every cut.
Every recording gets a transcript, a summary, chapters, and captions. Viewers watch in any browser and can comment without an account, and you see who watched. If you’re leaving Loom, paste your Loom share links and the videos move over with their titles and captions.
Pro is $9 per recorder per month or $72 a year, and new workspaces get a 14-day trial without a credit card. Viewers never need a seat. Recordings run up to two hours, at up to 4K, and you can download the MP4.
Choose it when your videos are walkthroughs, feedback, or customer answers, and you want to cut the stumbles before sending. Skip it when you need a multitrack timeline, AI voices, studio-style audio repair, remote interview recording, or automatic filler-word detection; in Chairkick you select the words to cut yourself.
Audio-only alternatives: Adobe Podcast and Audacity
If you used Descript mainly for its Studio Sound voice cleanup, Adobe Podcast’s Enhance Speech does the same job in the browser. The free plan handles files up to 30 minutes and one hour of audio a day; premium features come with Adobe Firefly Pro at $19.99 a month.
Audacity is free, open-source audio editing for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It has no text-based editing; transcription needs add-ons.
